Mortlach, Lossie and Insch
Our busy year has continued with 3 gigs within two weeks at
Mortlach Primary School (Dufftown), RAF Lossiemouth and Insch
Church.
The Mortlach concert included contributions from the school
pupils from kindergarten upwards and was in aid of school funds.
Willie entered into the spirit of the occasion (see below) and
Scoobie Doo made his usual guest appearance to conduct the band
through his own theme tune. Possibly the highlight of the night
was the youngest children in wellingtons, mackintoshes and
wielding umbrellas dancing to Singing in the Rain.

The engagement at Insch was the first of two concerts for
Christian Aid this Month (see the
diary for the upcoming Keith concert) and was
performed in front of an appreciative audience. New additions to
the repertoire include "Tea for Two" and further pieces will be
introduced at St. Rufus on the 23rd May, including "The Lost
Chord" with Ian Carr joining the Band on the organ.

Moray Music Festival
The Band performed at the Moray Music Festival in Elgin Town
Hall last Friday. Competing against Elgin Town Band and Moray
Concert Brass, our programme started with "I'll Walk with God",
continued with "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" and
"Music of the Night" and concluded with "Russian Circus Music".
All three bands were commended for their entertaining programmes
but we were awarded first prize for the "pure bravura of the
performance" - just reward for the hard work that Willie and the
Band put into rehearsals in the preceding weeks.
However, there is no rest for the wicked and this will be a busy
week with gigs at Portgordon Primary and RAF Lossiemouth
on Thursday and Friday respectively. We will have earned our
Easter break!

Busy Winter
Keith and District Silver Band have experienced one of their
busiest years in recent times. Despite the inclement weather the
Band fulfilled 13 engagements in the run up to Christmas
including the Huntly Rotary Christmas Festival and the Keith
Rotary Carol Concert. Other commitments took the Band to
Dufftown, Lossiemouth, Buckie and Strathdon.
Having successfully negotiated the festive season the players
are looking forward to competing in the Brass Band section at
the Moray Music festival and already have bookings throughout
2010. With 24 players, the Band is led by Willie Barron who has
conducted for 29 years (with a short break where he moved to the
Bass line and the group was led by Glenn Munroe). During this
time the Band has experienced highs and lows but a consistent
core of players has maintained a standard that is supplemented
by members from a wide area and of all ages. The repertoire is
varied from pop to classics taking in classic brass band and
film tunes on the way.
Currently the Band is looking to supplement the pool of players
from the local community and various positions are vacant,
including BBb Bass, Baritone, tuned and kit percussion and
Cornets. However, there is always room for players on any brass
band instrument whether they be novice or expert. All are made
welcome by this friendly and enthusiastic group. Band
instruments are available for those who do not possess their
own. Rehearsals are held in the Longmore Hall Keith, every
Sunday evening from 6.30 to 8.30pm. Interested potential players
can contact either Willie Barron (Tel 01542 887576 or email him
at
bill.barron.ts@btinternet.com ) or Wendy Jones (01542 887529
or
wendy2266@btinternet.com). |
